    Xiaoshan is the biggest district of Hangzhou, Zhejiang’s capital city .It is located on the southern bank of QiangTang River within the Yangtze River Delta along the Southeast coast. The cantonal area of Hangzhou is 3068km² including 8 districts with a population of 4.01 million. It is the political, economic and cultural center of Zhejiang Province. With a long history, Hangzhou was once one of the seven famous capitals of ancient China. It is ascertained by the State Council as the key scene tourist city and the famous historical & cultural city of China.In recent years, as one of the central cities in Yangze River Delta, Hangzhou grows very fast in economy. In 2004, the per capita GDP has reached US$ 4700. Its aggregate economy ranks No. 2 among all the capital cities of China while it has achieved other prominent achievements in science and education, culture and comprehensive environment, etc.

    Xiaoshan is in south of Hangzhou with an area of 1420 km² , a population of 1.16 million. The per capita GDP has reached US$ 5200 in 2004. It has preliminarily established a market economic system based on private economy with governmental coordination.
Xiaoshan is strong in industrial economy. In recent years, it has formed such pillar industries as machinery, electronics & auto parts, garment & down, fine chemistry, steel structure & construction. It has been named as the “China Textiles Production Base”, “China Down Feather Capital” and “Homeland of Steel Structure”. Many times it has the honors of “China Top 100 Strongest Counties in Comprehensive Countryside Strength”, “China Top 10 Richest County-level Cities ” and “Country Sanitation City”. Its comprehensive economic strength ranks No.1 among all the county-level cities in Zhejiang Province and No.7 in the whole country.
